Washington vs. Arizona State Game Preview and Prediction

Washington (4-5, 3-3) vs. Arizona State (6-3, 4-2)

Saturday, November 13th @ 4:00 p.m. PT

Husky Stadium (Seattle, Washington)

Line: Arizona State -5.5

TV: FS1

Radio: Seattle Sports Radio 950 KJR

The Washington Huskies will face off against the Arizona State Sun Devils at Husky Stadium, as the Dawgs are coming off one of their most challenging weeks in program history.

During their last game, the Huskies were in a prime position to pull off an upset against their hated rivals from the South.  In the second half, the Huskies couldn’t stop the run and score points, which resulted in a disappointing 26-16 home loss against the Oregon Ducks.  The following day, former Washington offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach John Donovan was removed from his position.

This week, the Huskies are facing an opponent from the Pac-12 South, where they like to run the football and play physical defense. So far this season, Arizona State is 6-3, after a convincing 31-16 home victory against the USC Trojans last weekend, and becoming bowl eligible.

Offensively, the Sun Devils will have to control the tempo and the clock with their physical rushing attack, while trying to impose their will.

Defensively, the Huskies will have to sell out and stop the run and force ASU to throw into their talented secondary.

Something has to give, in this contest between two teams looking to improve and finish strong during the final stretch of the season!

ESPN MATCHUP PREDICTOR

GAME NOTES

– Arizona State leads the all-time series against the Huskies, 19-17. At one point, the UW led the series 15-8, but ASU has had the better of it in recent years, winning 11 of the last 13.

– Washington leads the Pac-12 in first downs allowed, passing yards allowed, pass efficiency defense, and scoring defense; and is second in total defense

– UW is the only FBS program that has scored in every red-zone opportunity this season … the Huskies have scored 17 touchdowns and nine field goals in 26 trips inside the opponent’s 20-yard line this season

– In a rare set of circumstances, UW will mark the third-straight team ASU will play without the head coach that started the season at the helm, as Washington’s Jimmy Lake has been suspended following an incident in last weekend’s game against the Ducks. ASU is coming off games against Washington State (Nick Rolovich let go due to COVID-19 state legislation) and USC (Clay Helton let go after loss to Stanford in Week 2).

– ASU has allowed just seven plays over 50 yards to opponents since the 2018 season over 39 games.

– An ASU victory would… Keep ASU within at least a game of the first in the Pac-12 South.

PREDICTION

Jeff Wright (6-3)

After a tumultuous past week, there are a ton of distractions for the Huskies to work through.  Interim head coach, new offensive signal-caller, new quarterbacks coach, a possible quarterback change, suspensions, etc.  ASU is one of the better running teams in the conference and the Husky defense has not been able to stop that all season.  It’s going to be another rainy Saturday of football and the Husky offense just hasn’t been able to run the football effectively this season.  How will the Dawgs play without their coach and leader in Jimmy Lake?  So many open-ended questions for the Huskies to answer.  In the end, I see a comfortable Sun Devils victory on the stormy horizon.

Arizona State 33 – Washington 21
