Washington Throttles Cal in 84-61 Rout Down In The Bay

Per The University of Washington Press Release…

BERKELEY, Calif. — Entering Thursday night’s game against California as one of the hottest programs on the West Coast, the Washington men’s basketball team didn’t skip a beat. The Huskies got it done early and often in a wire-to-wire domination of the Golden Bears in Berkeley, winning by a score of 84-63, their biggest winning margin of the season.

It was Emmitt Matthews Jr. who set the tone early for the Huskies. He scored 7 quick points to help UW get out to an early 10-2 advantage.

The hot start by Matthews Jr. was a sign of things to come for the Huskies, who would lead by as many as 14 points in the first half and led for over 38 of the 40 minutes in the game.

As he has made a habit of doing, Terrell Brown Jr. had another big first half. He had no issue extending his streak of double-digit scoring in every game this season, pouring in 13 points on 5-10 shooting before the half.

Leading by 9 coming out of the locker room, UW didn’t allow California any opportunities to make a comeback. An initial 9-2 burst to start the second half ballooned into an extended 23-9 run that put the Huskies up 61-38 with 12:22 remaining.

The Golden Bears would not get closer than 16 points for the remainder of the contest, as Washington completely overwhelmed the home side to close out the game.

It was a career-night for Daejon Davis, who had his best game as a Husky. He finished with 19 points on 7-10 shooting with five made three-pointers to tie a career high in made threes. He also grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists.

Jamal Bey added a season-high 20 points with five made threes of his own, which tied a career-high for him. His fifth trey of the game was the 12th of the night for UW, which set a team season-high in made threes with 12.

Brown Jr. would finish with another stellar offensive effort, scoring 19 points with eight assists.

Washington continued its trend of elite ball control in conference play. The 18 team assists were a season-high and seven team turnovers marked the fifth Pac-12 game where the Huskies have had single-digit turnovers.

California is already the second Pac-12 team that Washington has swept this season, after the team finished a 2-0 season sweep of Utah on Sunday.

The Huskies will look to make it three on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. when they visit Stanford, who they defeated 67-65 in Seattle last month.
