SEATTLE – University of Washington athletic department officials have announced fan experience changes for Huskies’ events inside Alaska Airlines Arena, including the sale of beer and wine for men’s and women’s basketball games and clear bag and no re-entry policies throughout all arena sports. The UW, which has sold beer and wine in Husky Ballpark and Husky Softball Stadium since 2018, becomes the sixth Pac-12 institution to offer it for basketball.
“In recent years, fan feedback has indicated a strong desire for the offering of beer and wine throughout our basketball competition facilities,” UW Director of Athletics Jennifer Cohen said. “After seeing many of our peer institutions introduce beer and wine sales in their facilities, having a successful launch of sales in other venues in our athletic village, and monitoring the Seattle Storm’s alcohol sales in Alaska Airlines Arena this summer, our campus committee determined the timing was right to responsibly introduce sales for basketball games.”
UW officials will closely monitor the beer and wine sales at basketball events as consideration is given for future opportunities within other UW athletics venues. The UW collected data from peer institutions which indicated that making beer and wine available for purchase in general seating areas decreased alcohol-related incidents within the venue.
Additionally, in an effort to continue to create the safest environment for student-athletes, staff and spectators, a clear bag and no re-entry policy will be enforced at all arena events. The clear bag policy will mirror what’s been put in place at Husky Stadium for UW football games and the no re-entry policy has been enforced at Husky baseball and softball games.
