9 DAYS ‘TIL CHRISTMAS

The 1959 Washington Huskies Football team entered the 1960 Rose Bowl matchup ranked the #8 team in the nation, and facing another top-ten team in the #6 Wisconsin Badgers.

It was the first time that both football programs had ever faced each other, and the Big Ten Conference Champion Badgers were favored by a touchdown.

Washington jumped out to an early 17-0 lead in the first quarter and the quick start began with a 6-yard touchdown run by Husky Don McKeta. Halfback George Fleming also returned a 53-yard punt in the first quarter and ran it back to “The House”.

The performance by the Huskies was one of their most dominant in Husky history, as this was a 44-8 wide-margin victory over another top-ten team.

Washington quarterback Bob Schloredt and halfback George Fleming were named Co-Players of the Game.  It was the first appearance in the Rose Bowl for the Huskies since 1944.
