Counting down “The 25 Days of Husky Christmas”…..
“DubLife” is doing its third consecutive season of the annual Holiday countdown to Christmas highlighting special moments in Husky Athletics history. Our segment is meant to bring positive thoughts of our favorite university during a time of the year where thanks and reflection are at the forefront of our minds. This year’s version will feature 25 random and exciting moments, in no particular order or ranking of importance.
14 DAYS ‘TIL CHRISTMAS
The 1981 Washington Huskies Football team entered the 1982 Rose Bowl game ranked #12 and faced the Big Ten Champions, the #13 Iowa Hawkeyes.
Iowa was considered a 3-point favorite against the Huskies, and the Dawgs used it as motivation to prove everybody wrong in “Granddaddy” fashion.
On defense, the Huskies used their physical and stout defense to limit the Hawkeyes offense to just 264 total yards for the entire game. Washington shut out Iowa, en route to a 28-0 victory.
The big story of the day was the surprise emergence of Husky freshman running back Jacque Robinson. He notched 20 carries for 142-yards and 2 TD runs, with a 34-yard momentum-swinging score in the third quarter.
Robinson became the first freshman to win the Rose Bowl Player of the Game award, which goes down as one of the greatest performances in Husky Football history. In December of 2019, Robinson was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame for his performance.
