10 DAYS ‘TIL CHRISTMAS
The 1977 Washington Huskies Football team entered the 1978 Rose Bowl matchup ranked #13 and two-touchdown underdogs, to the #4 Michigan Wolverines and legendary coach Bo Schembechler.
Washington came out to a blazing hot start and found themselves leading the Wolverines by a score of 17-0 at the half, and in complete control of the game.
In the third quarter, the Huskies were firmly ahead 24-0, but Michigan mounted a serious comeback that would see the game come down to the final drive.
Huskies linebacker Michael Jackson sealed the 27-20 victory when he intercepted Michigan quarterback Rick Leach’s pass on the Husky 3-yard line, with around 1:21 left on the clock.
“It was weird,” said Jackson. “I had a dream the night before that between Leach and me was a receiver and I had to make a decision on how to cover him.”
Washington quarterback Warren Moon was named Rose Bowl Player of the Game. This victory definitely goes down as one of the greatest wins in Husky history.
