Washington’s head coach earns second weekly honor after defeating No. 6 Oregon

ATLANTA (NOV. 14, 2022) – Officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl today announced that for the second time this season, Washington head football coach Kalen DeBoer has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week presented by PNC.

The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award’s three pillars of scholarship, leadership, and integrity.

The No. 24 Washington Huskies earned a 37-34 victory over then No. 6 Oregon in Eugene on Saturday evening. The Huskies kicked a 43-yard field goal with less than a minute remaining to snap the Ducks’ eight-game winning streak. Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. now leads the nation in passing yards after throwing for 408 yard and two touchdowns to lead the Huskies to victory.

After claiming its first win at Autzen Stadium in Eugene since 2016, Washington moved up nine spots to No. 15 in the latest AP poll.

Earlier this season, DeBoer was named The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week when Washington took down then No. 11 Michigan State 39-28 for their first win over a ranked Power Five nonconference opponent at home since 2001.

“What a statement road win in hostile territory for coach DeBoer and the Washington football program,” said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. “Coach Dodd frequently took his teams into loud and unfriendly stadiums, and would have appreciated the composure the Huskies had to show to pull out this win.”

DeBoer came to Washington after serving as the head football coach at Fresno State for two seasons. There his teams went 12-6 overall, including a 9-3 record in 2021, which tied for the second most wins for a head coach in his first full season with the Bulldogs.

Off the field, the Huskies first-year head coach has stressed the importance of the surrounding community and how his football team plans to get involved. Before the 2022 season, Washington’s offensive linemen cleaned up the streets of Seattle as a part of the  program’s ongoing service projects in the city. In March, DeBoer spoke to fans and members of the community at the Kitsap Athletic Roundhouse in Kitsap County, Washington, where proceeds from the event supported youth and amateur athletics in Kitsap.

DeBoer looks to build upon Washington’s established success in the classroom as well, considering the football team earned a 991 Academic Progress Rate and an 85 Graduation Success Rate last year.

“Coach DeBoer has put his team in a great position to compete in the Pac-12 in his first year as head coach,” said Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO & President Gary Stokan. “More importantly, he has also put an emphasis on giving back to the community and building his players into complete individuals off the field as well.”

The Dodd Trophy presented by PNC– along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.

A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2022 season. The winner of the 2022 Dodd Trophy will be announced in Atlanta during the week of the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
