The Washington Huskies held their fifth Spring Camp practice this morning and Day Five is officially in the books.
ELEMENTS
– The team practiced inside Husky Stadium and it was the second practice open to the public.
– The weather was sunny and with a slight chill in the air, but a very nice day outside.
– The length of the practice was approximately 2 hours and 5 minutes.
NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS
– The team practiced with full pads today and focused a lot on scrimmaging, alignment, fundamentals, footwork, and drills.
– Today’s practice was a good mix of scrimmages with referees, special teams work, and a ton of reps.
– Today’s 11 on 11 sessions consisted of some reps for both the offense and the defense throughout the entire practice.
– Drill work included Donuts, tackling, donuts, linemen footwork, WR footwork, QB footwork and handoffs, DB footwork, QB passing, DB ball stripping, Barrels, Lineman technique, RB handoffs, Slants, Receiver deep ball routes, stances, Sleds, FG kicking and special teams work, and coverages.
– The QB group worked on progressions, footwork, rollouts, sideline throws, and slant throws. Dylan Morris did a good job of going through his progressions today. Sam Huard threw the ball with authority today. Patrick O’Brien was accurate with his throws further down the field. Camden Sirmon showed his ability to scramble when the play broke down. Jesse Martineau made some nice sideline throws in traffic. Overall this group honed in on fundamentals and going through their reads and progressions.
– During the 11 on 11 sessions the First Team Offense consisted primarily of Dylan Morris, Cameron Davis, Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan, Terrell Bynum, Cade Otton, Jaxson Kirkland, Ulumoo Ale, Luke Wattenberg, Henry Bainivalu, Victor Curne. Sean McGrew and Devin Culp rotated in with this group as well.
– During the 11 on 11 sessions the First Team Defense consisted primarily of Tuli Letuligasenoa, Sam Taimani, Zion Tupuola-Fetui, Ryan Bowman, Edefuan Ulofoshio, Jackson Sirmon, Trent McDuffie, Kyler Gordon, Kamren Fabiculanan, Cameron Williams, Dominique Hampton. Alex Cook rotated in with this group as well.
– There was an emphasis on alignment and formation at the beginning of practice.
– OC John Donovan was very hands-on early in practice with alignment and handoffs to RB’s.
– LB’s worked a lot on keeping their eyes during drills.
– Tight ends did a lot of emphasis on blocking during drills.
– DB’s worked a lot on stripping the ball early in practice.
– There were a lot of penalties early on during scrimmages.
– RB Sean McGrew looked impressive during blocking drills.
– False starts were an issue today. They will have to get that cleaned up going forward.
– Special teams and gunner drills were evident during mid-practice.
– QB’s were able to practice their progressions during 7-on-7.
– Punt return coverage drills were performed towards the end of practice.
– OLB Zion Tupuola-Fetui has bright blond hair.
– WR Jalen McMillan and WR Rome Odunze were fielding punts during drills.
– TE group looks poised to have a great season and is progressing nicely.
– RB Jay’Veon Sunday looks like the real deal. The RB’s group should be highly productive this season.
PLAYERS WHO STOOD OUT
– WR Rome Odunze showed his ability to make big-time catches and has tremendous hands.
– WR Ja’Lynn Polk has tremendous hands and speed when catching the ball and looks like a big-time threat in the passing game.
PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR
– LB Alphonzo Tuputala has a quick burst of speed and seems to read the play well while swarming around the football. He had a pick during 7-on-7.
– DB Dominique Hampton was making good breaks on the ball while getting deflections. He is playing without hesitation as each practice goes by.

– DB Mishael Powell’s intercepting QB Camden Sirmon during 11-on-11.
– LB Alphonzo Tuputala’s sack of QB Patrick O’Brien during 11-on-11.
– WR Rome Odunze’s 40-yard goal line catch from QB Sam Huard during 11-on-11.
– LB Daniel Heimuli burned RB Jay’Veon Sunday during blocking drills.
– DB Brendan Radley-Hiles sack on QB Sam Huard during 11-on-11.
– OLB Jordan Lolohea’s tackle on RB Caleb Berry during 11-on-11.
– DB Cameron Williams picked off QB Sam Huard during 11-on-11.
– OLB Sav’ell Smalls sacked QB Camden Sirmon during 11-on-11.
– OLB Ryan Bowman sacked QB Dylan Morris twice during 11-on-11.
– DB Jacobe Covington picked off QB Dylan Morris during 11-on-11.
– QB Sam’s Huard’s sideline 40-yard pass to WR Rome Odunze during 11-on-11.
– QB Dylan Morris’ 30-yard pass over the middle to WR Rome Odunze during 7-on-7.
– LB Alphonzo Tuputala’s interception of QB Patrick O’Brien during 7-on-7.
WHO WON THE DAY?
– Defense won the day. While the offense had their moments of success, the defense came up with turnovers and also sacks.
