Husky Spring Football 2021 – Day 14: Practice Notes

The Washington Huskies held their fourteenth Spring Camp practice this morning and Day Fourteen is officially in the books.

ELEMENTS

– The team practiced inside Husky Stadium and it was the ninth practice open to the public.

– The weather was rainy, windy, and overcast.  The conditions were challenging at the start of practice, especially for the fans.

– The length of the practice was approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS

– The team practiced with pads today with shorts, and focused a lot on alignment, fundamentals, footwork, and drills.

– Today’s practice was light contact during some of the scrimmages with no referees present, offense/defense groups, special teams, alignment, formations, and a ton of situational reps.  It was a warmup for the Spring Game tomorrow.

– Today’s 11 on 11 sessions encompassed a lot of situational scrimmages from certain parts of the field.

– Drill work included WR routes, QB footwork and touch passes, DB coverages, QB touch passing, pillars, Barrels, Lineman technique, RB catches, DB interceptions, Slants, Receiver sideline routes, Sleds, FG kicking and special teams work, and coverages.

– The QB group worked on touch passes, handoffs, progressions, footwork, rollouts, short sideline throws, slant throws and scrambling.  Dylan Morris was consistent with his rollout throws and had good zip.  Sam Huard looked great on his touch passes.  Patrick O’Brien looked poised and in command of the offense. Camden Sirmon was accurate during quick slant throws.  Jesse Martineau was had a quick release during drills.  Overall this group worked on fundamentals and moving the offense during scrimmages.

– During the 11 on 11 sessions the First Team Offense consisted primarily of Dylan Morris, Cameron Davis, Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan, Terrell Bynum, Cade Otton, Jaxson Kirkland, Ulumoo Ale, Luke Wattenberg, Henry Bainivalu, Matteo Mele.  Sean McGrew, Richard Newton, Kamari Pleasant, Devin Culp and Mark Redman rotated in with this group as well.

– During the 11 on 11 sessions the First Team Defense consisted primarily of Tuli Letuligasenoa, Sam Taimani, Cooper McDonald, Edefuan Ulofoshio, Jackson Sirmon, Ryan Bowman, Trent McDuffie, Kyler Gordon, Kamren Fabiculanan, Cameron Williams, Dominique Hampton.  Faatui Tuitele, Jeremiah Martin, Sav’ell Smalls, Jordan Lolohea, and Bralen Trice rotated in with this group as well.

– Players were split into Purple, Yellow, Gold, and Black jerseys today.

– The team separated into their different groups from the Spring Game Draft for tomorrow.

– There was a lot of prep at the start of practice for the Spring Game tomorrow.

– LB’s worked on getting off the edge during drills.

– DB’s worked on back pedaling into coverage and then picking off passes.

– DL worked on using their hands and leverage during drills.

– OL pushed the sleds all around the field during one drill.

– LB’s worked on shedding blocks and tackles with still getting to the ball carrier.

– The defense emphasized stripping the ball during drills.

– Kickoff coverage drills were practiced today with RB Sean McGrew taking first snaps at returner.

– PK Peyton Henry made his first extra point of the scrimmage sessions.

– RB Cameron Davis took reps as a kickoff returner.

– WR Rome Odunze took reps as a punt returner.

– DB Kyler Gordon took snaps at punt returner.

– Practice was less intense today with the Spring Game on the horizon tomorrow.

– Dropped snaps and holding onto the ball we’re an issue today.

PLAYERS WHO STOOD OUT

– TE Mark Redmond continues to impress as he made several catches and is a reliable target.  He will be in the mix for significant playing time this season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR

– RB Jay’Veon Sunday continues to run with purpose and has great vision and cutback ability.  He seems to be getting used to the speed of the game at the collegiate level.

– RB Cameron Davis 20-yard run during 11-on-11.

– WR Ja’Lynn Polk’s 15-yard catch from QB Dylan Morris during 11-on-11.

– RB Cameron Davis 5-yard TD run during 11-on-11.

– TE Mark Redman’s 20-yard catch from QB Patrick O’Brien during 11-on-11.

– TE Mark Rodman’s one-handed TD catch from QB Patrick O’Brien during 11-on-11.

– DB Julius Irvin picked off QB Camden Sirmon during 11-on-11.

– DB Mishael Powell sacked QB Patrick O’Brien during 11-on-11.

– PK Tim Horn made a 50-yard FG to end practice during 11-on-11.

WHO WON THE DAY?

– Both the offense and the defense made some good plays today.  It was warm up day for the Spring Game tomorrow
