The Washington Huskies held their first Spring Camp practice this morning and Day One is officially in the books.
ELEMENTS
– The team started out practice on the East Practice Field and remained there the entire time. Some position groups like the quarterbacks and kickers went inside Husky Stadium for some individualized work.
– The weather was cold, windy and light drizzle from time to time.
– The length of the practice was approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes.
NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS
– The team practiced with no pads today while wearing shorts, helmets and jerseys and focused a lot on fundamentals, footwork and drills.
– Today’s practice was a shake the rust off type of practice. While it was certainly sloppy at some points, it was nice to see the team out their practicing.
– Today’s 11 on 11 sessions consisted of some reps for both the offense and the defense, intermingled throughout the entire practice.
– Drill work included linebacker backpedals, linemen footwork, WR routes, QB footwork and handoffs, DB footwork, QB passing, DB comebacks, Barrels, Lineman technique, Receiver deep ball routes, FG kicking and special teams work.
– The QB group worked on footwork, rollouts and basic footwork. Dylan Morris took his snaps with the first unit. He made some decent throws, but also made some rusty one’s has well. Sam Huard’s debut consisted of some learning experiences and soaking it all in. The kid has a beautiful release when he throws. Huard will have to bulk up in the weight room but technically he would still be in high school. Patrick O’Brien at times was the most consistent quarterback with his throws. Overall this group showed some rust and will improve as camp goes along.
– During the 11 on 11 session the First Team Offense consisted primarily of Dylan Morris, Sean McGrew, Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan, Terrell Bynum, Cade Otton, Jaxson Kirkland, Ulumoo Ale, Luke Wattenberg, Henry Bainivalu, Victor Curne. Kamari Pleasant, Cameron Davis and Devin Culp rotated in with this group as well.
– During the 11 on 11 session the First Team Defense consisted primarily of Tuli Letuligasenoa, Sam Taimani, Zion Tupuola-Fetui, Ryan Bowman, Edefuan Ulofoshio, Jackson Sirmon, Trent McDuffie, Kyler Gordon, Kamren Fabiculanan, Cameron Williams, Alex Cook. Dominique Hampton rotated in with this group as well.
– Jimmy Lake literally runs from drill to drill.
– Trent McDuffie took the first snaps as punt returner.
– The enthusiasm of DB coach Will Harris is evident. He ran up the sideline on interceptions.
– WR Terrell Bynum looks like a primary target in the passing game this season.
– There will be a true QB competition to determine a starter this fall.
– Before warmups and stretching, the team actually did some drills.
– Music was blasting throughout the entire practice.
– RB Jay’Veon Sunday may be another physical RB the Huskies are looking for.
– OL Geirean Hatchett rotated in at center for part of the practice.
