SEATTLE — The Washington men’s basketball team looked to make it four straight home wins on Sunday afternoon against Utah. It wasn’t easy and it took two overtimes, but the Huskies (11-8, 6-3) got the job done, taking down the Utes (8-14, 1-11) by a score of 77-73.
Nate Roberts was cooking early for the Huskies, scoring all six of their points and grabbing four rebounds (two offensive) at the first media timeout of the game.
Roberts would continue to dominate in the first half, setting a season-high with 11 points on a perfect 5-5 from the field.
Terrell Brown Jr. also got to work early, pouring in 12 points in the first half, including a three-pointer right before the buzzer to give UW a 34-30 lead at the break. He only needed 20 minutes to continue his streak of double digit points in every game this season (19).
Jamal Bey would bury a three-pointer with 16:57 left to cap off a 6-0 spurt that gave the Huskies their largest lead of the night at 40-32.
Utah fought right back, going on an 11-0 run of its own to take a 43-40 lead. The two teams traded blows, with neither side leading by more than 3 points the rest of regulation.
Down the stretch, a monster dunk by Emmitt Matthews Jr. tied the game at 55 with 2:25 left.
PJ Fuller and Brown Jr. would each go 2-2 at the free throw line to eventually tie the game at 57 at the end of regulation.
Once again, Washington was a force on the boards, with Roberts (4) and Matthews Jr. (3) grabbing huge offensive rebounds.
With just over two minutes remaining in the first overtime, Matthews Jr. cleaned up a missed layup with a putback to once again tie the game.
After Brown went 1-2 from the line to give the Huskies a 1-point lead, Utah hit a three to take a 68-66 lead. Brown would answer right back, draining a nearly impossible floater in the lane to force double overtime.
After the team got a defensive stop on the first possession of double overtime, Daejon Davis — who played one of the best defensive games by a Husky this season — quickly deposited a three-pointer for his first bucket of the game. Just over a minute later, Cole Bajema banged one of his own to give UW a 76-69 advantage.
The Huskies would continue to string together defensive stops to lock up the win and complete the season sweep of Utah. It was UW’s fourth straight home win, which have all been Pac-12 games. It was also the team’s fifth win in its last six games.
Terrell Brown Jr. finished with 30 points, his third 30-point effort of the season and coming up just 2 points short of a career-high. Nate Roberts (11) and Emmitt Matthews Jr. (10) rounded out the Huskies in double digits
