SEATTLE — The Washington men’s basketball team used a stifling defensive effort backed by a rowdy home crowd en route to a 60-58 win over Colorado on Thursday night at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Huskies (10-8, 5-3) traded blows with the Buffaloes (13-7, 5-5), trailing by as many as 9 and leading by as many 15, but ultimately made enough plays down the stretch to clinch their third straight home win and fourth win in their last five games.
Colorado got out to a quick 5-0 lead and was on fire from three-point range to eventually take a 27-20 lead. Terrell Brown Jr. was able to help UW keep pace, putting up 17 points on 6-10 shooting in the first half alone.
In the second half, the Huskies were able to string together stops on the defensive end to lead to offensive buckets.
Washington had 16 steals as a team, its second-highest mark of the season. This was aided by the efforts of Jamal Bey and PJ Fuller, who each collected four steals of their own.
All told, it was a 19-3 run for Washington that turned a 34-33 deficit into a 52-37 advantage.
From then on, the UW defense did its job getting stops and the team rebounded perhaps as well as it has all season, collecting 42 total boards, 15 of which were offensive.
While the Buffaloes made a late run and cut the lead to 2 points, the Huskies locked them down on the final possession of the game to secure the victory.
Terrell Brown Jr. scored 27 points for his 11th 20-point game of the season and kept his double-figure scoring streak in every game alive. Emmitt Matthews
