BOULDER, Colo. — Despite another career day from Cole Bajema, the Washington men’s basketball team was unable to keep pace with Colorado on Sunday afternoon, falling by a score of 78-64.
For the third straight game, the Huskies got out to a quick start shooting the ball, with three-pointers by Cole Bajema and Emmitt Matthews Jr. helping them get out to an early 12-6 advantage.
After a 10-0 run by the Buffaloes, Bajema and Daejon Davis hit back-to-back threes to put UW back up 18-16.
The two sides would trade blows, but an 11-0 run by Colorado would help the home side hold a 39-28 lead at halftime.
Just three days after a 14-point comeback on the road, the Huskies were not out of it. With the Buffaloes holding a 48-35 advantage, Cole Bajema hit his fifth three of the game, followed by 6 straight points from Terrell Brown Jr., to give UW an 8-0 run and make it a 5-point game.
Basketball is a game of runs, however, and Colorado would use a 14-4 outburst to take a 62-47 lead with under seven minutes remaining to all but put the game away. Washington was unable to get back within single digits and dropped to 1-2 in the Pac-12.
Just three days after setting career highs in points (15) and three-pointers made (5), Cole Bajema one-upped himself, as he finished with 18 points on six made threes to lead the offensive effort for UW.
Emmitt Matthews Jr. added another 16 points, going 7-7 from the free-throw line.
Terrell Brown Jr. scored 12 points, giving himself double-digit points in all 13 games this season. He also had six steals, setting a career-high and tying Daejon Davis for the most in a game this season by a Husky.
Washington returns home on Wednesday night against California, hosting the Golden Bears for a 7:00 p.m. tip on the Pac-12 Networks.
