After viewing the first five practices of Fall Camp, some position battles and personnel spots started to take shape.
While the start of Fall Camp is surely not enough time to fully decide starting positions, seeing how position coaches were shuffling their lineups gave us further insight into their strategic positioning.
Head coach Chris Petersen certainly does not like the idea of depth charts. He doesn’t believe in any players holding on to positions as he preaches constant competition at all positions.
Instead of calling it a depth chart, Petersen likes to call it a “seating chart” as no player should ever feel comfortable in their current spot..It’s always fluid.
Last season, Petersen was asked about the idea of feeling good about depth on his team, which he quickly responded to.
“I don’t ever feel like we..you know..have a ton of depth. Cuz you know..we talking about numbers or guys that are ready to play?..you know..two different things. I can get a lot of guys off the street right there (points outside) and give us a lot of depth. That doesn’t help anybody!..We need guys ready to play!”
Another thing of note during camp was the players were not in full pads during the first five practices, which plays a big factor into these projected charts.
The position coaches did a lot of shuffling of players during scrimmages and some players bounced in and out of the “two-deeps”.
Obviously by the end of Fall Camp, this projected “seating chart” will probably be different from the final depth chart unveiled for the season opener against Eastern Washington.
Here is an educated projection of how things looked…..
