Petersen recognized for win against No. 8 Washington State in the Boeing Apple Cup
ATLANTA (Nov. 26, 2018) – Officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl today announced that Washington Head Football Coach Chris Petersen has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week.
The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors the football coach whose program embodies the award’s three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity, while also having success on the playing field during the previous week.
Coach Petersen and the Huskies secured their spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game by defeating rival No. 8 Washington State 28-15 at Martin Stadium in the 111th edition of the Boeing Apple Cup. This was the third consecutive year that both Washington and Washington State were ranked in the AP Top 25 when facing off. This game also marked Washington’s second Pac-12 North Division title in three years and the sixth straight win for the Huskies over the Cougars.
“Coach Petersen is a former Dodd Trophy winner, so we aren’t surprised that he has once again led his team to a Pac-12 Championship Game after another battle against an excellent Washington State team,” said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. “Under Coach Petersen’s leadership, the Huskies are now a win away from the program’s second Pac-12 title in three years and the program’s third consecutive New Year’s Six bowl.”
Petersen was hired as head coach of the Washington Huskies at the end of the 2013 season, after leading Boise State to 10 or more wins in seven of his eight seasons with the Broncos. Since arriving at Washington, Petersen has successfully led the Huskies to an appearance in the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in 2016 and another New Year’s Six bowl game in 2017. In 2016, the Huskies led the nation in turnover margin, and were first in the conference and eighth in the nation in both total offense and total defense. Following the 2016 season, Petersen was honored with the Gene Stalling Award, awarded annually to a college head football coach who is both a humanitarian and an extraordinary coach. Petersen is also the recipient of the 2010 Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award during his time at Boise State.
In addition to his efforts on the field, Coach Petersen continues to foster the importance of academics for his student athletes. Washington has a current Academic Progress Rating (APR) of 986, ranking first in the Pac-12 and eighth out of all FBS schools.

Coach Petersen has established a “Built for Life” philosophy for his team that works to mold men from his student athletes. Petersen has built a coaching career around this idea in an attempt to help his players make the most of their lives and to create a path to a successful future for them. Petersen works to instill good values in his team and ultimately the importance of doing something that is impactful for their families and their communities.
A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients for The Dodd Trophy at the conclusion of the 2018 season. The winner of the 2018 Dodd Trophy will then be announced in Atlanta during Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Week.
