Washington offensive lineman Kaleb McGary was selected Thursday by the Atlanta Falcons with 31st selection of the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
McGary, from Fife, Wash., spent five seasons at Washington, beginning his career as a defensive lineman. After redshirting the 2014 season, he played in 12 games (starting six) as a redshirt freshman in 2015. He went on to start all 41 games over his last three seasons, helping the Huskies to Pac-12 Conference titles in 2016 and 2018, along with a College Football Playoff berth in 2016.
As a senior, McGary won the Morris Trophy, given to the Pac-12’s top offensive lineman (as voted by opponent defensive linemen). He was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection at right tackle in both 2017 and 2018.
McGary is the first UW offensive lineman selected in the NFL Draft since 2012, when Senio Kelemete was chosen in the fifth round. He’s the first UW o-lineman to go in the first round since Lincoln Kennedy was drafted by the Falcons with the ninth pick of the 1993 Draft.
The Huskies have produced a first-round draft pick in the last three drtafts (John Ross in 2017 and Vita Vea in 2018) and in five of the last nine. McGary is the sixth first-round selection under current UW head coach Chris Petersen.
